The board review system is now up and running. You can review a board once you've finished at least one Public game on it by going to the Board info page and clicking on the Review tab.
Ratings are out of 10 and for now the average is a simple mean, once there are a few weeks worth of ratings in the system this will switch to a weighted Bayesian to better balance out boards with a few reviews vs older boards.
The ratings will be used as a way to sort boards by popularity on the boards page in the near future.
May authors please be able to receive an email when one of their boards is reviewed?
Also, having the board review system and the board review system is a rather confusing thing. Shall we standardize on calling this review a rating?

I like this suggestion.

Holy crap!

Yep will do Cram.
What about incentives to rate boards - I'm thinking maybe a couple of days free premium per rating written? Anyone got any better ideas?

I'm really unsure if that's a good idea. Then you almost "force" ratings. Would that result in more 1 star, 10 star, or random ratings?

Nein.
If you pay people for their participation, then you end up with folks who otherwise have nothing constructive to share clicking the first star their mouse hits in order to cash in on the prizes.
The social/web2.0 attitude of internet dwellers these days compels them to share their opinion on virtually everything, even if its not solicited. There's no need to push any harder.
Caveats:
You need to make it obvious that a board rating system exists.
You need to make it so that other people can see from a player's profile how they have rated boards. Part of capitalizing on Web2.0 tendencies is to capitalize on need to belong to a community and voyeuristic tendencies.
Other suggestions:
Add a widget to the Home tab which pulls a random or recent written review and posts it in a little box showing the stars, the map thumbnail, and the first 100 or so characters of the review.
On the boards page, add a row of stars (maybe just on mouseover) to the map box. Due to the size, scale it down to 5 stars and just take the average and cut it in half for display here.
All good ideas thanks Cram.

So, umm... do the ratings for Abysmal, Terrible, Bad, and Poor exist for any particular reason? If a map were to get such a rating, should the Review Team member who approved it be fired?
It seems they exist for precisely that reason. The review team is not infallible, so those low-star review options are just another check against the judgment of the review team. Hopefully they won't be necessary very often.

What do you suggest, a possible rating from 8-10 ?!?
Whatever it ends up being, the scale should definitely go to 11.

I support this with all my heart.

11 is weak sauce... it should go to up to 12.

Seriously.

I see that this has been shot down, but I would encourage you to keep thinking of ways to incorporate free premium into something. Don't give up! I'm thinking about the general health of the community!...err... something like that :p

Not to totally derail the thread, but one of the Risk sites had some very awesome videos. Great quality videos could warrant free premium IMO, but I mean great quality, not just some noob that makes a video with a bunch of screenshots on maps that he has won and thrown in some random songs .
I'm sure there are a lot of other options that could grant small boosts of premium.
