Is it just me, or do other people have trouble telling the difference between white and the light grey colour. I just started a 2 player game, and really, I have no idea who is the other player and who is neutral. And in a Europe game with 8 people, I am totally lost again.
Would it be best to use dark grey for nuetral, and get rid of light grey all together? Surely another colour can be found?
Maybe I'm just colour blind?
Nah, you're just lack-of-color blind.
Hmmm.
But yeah I agree very very tough to tell apart.
You mean every-colo(u)r blind(e)?
i've found it depends on the screen. i have a terrible time on my CRT at home telling some colors apart (usually the difference in like colors - green/lt green, white/grey, etc). but when i head to a different computer, here at work or the laptop, i don't have a problem.
I know people who pick the neutral or neutral-like colours to avoid being hit or to confuse people - I don't think anything similar to the colour neutral armies should be a colour available for players to pick.

I think it's a good strategy, although it's tough to part with Green :)

Interesting...in this case the opponent has usually been using another colour - until now!! Not blaming them, just wishing I'd thought of it first. ;-)
It's actually surprisingly hard to find 16 colors (17 including Neutrals) that are distinguishable enough from each other. As soon as I have updated the Designer to allow defined colors on a per-board basis this should be fixed somewhat as designers will only need to define enough colors for the max players on the board.
Interesting discussion on this very issue with quite a few very helpful links can be found here.
EDIT: Haha, I broke the forum post previewer!
Cool - I like this set the best I think: http://prestopnik.com/warfish/16squares.redbaron.png
Yep to what asm said, although the white still may be an issue. I think the best solution will be to allow Designers to define them, and restrict them to 8 or however many (as long as that number is above their max number of players allowed).

The two medium blues are awfully similar. I have a set of 18-20 colors that I think are very distinctive.
Can you wing it to me at [email protected] please? Will see if I can sub it in.
All I have is the RGB color codes from WF. Gonna have to wait til later at least if not tomorrow, but I'll send you something and see what you think.
I've been honing my color palette for years on Warfish, and these are my current favorites:
1. Cyan 0 255 255
2. Aqua 0 140 180
3. Blue 60 60 185
4. Purple 125 28 205
5. Lavender 128 128 255
6. Lilac 255 133 255
7. Pink 255 20 147
8. Red 238 0 0
9. Yellow 238 238 0
10. Orange 238 118 0
11. Brown 165 42 42
12. Leather 110 0 0
13. Lime 0 255 64
14. Olive 120 142 35
15. Green 0 128 0
16. Grey 112 128 144
Substitute colors:
17. Black 0 0 0
18. White 255 255 255
19. Navy 45 45 255
It's very hard to find 16 colors, none of which can be confused with any other, but this set comes pretty close. It also helps when you have two fairly similar colors to give one of them black text and the other white text.
Just threw my third game because of the white, light grey, grey issue. I really hope something can be done about this soon because 3 games makes a heck of a difference at the top of the ranking table!!
Is it possible to give the user the ability to adjust the colour set? This would be the perfect solution.
Difference between white and grey is no problem - it is that light grey in the middle that I can only tell if it is sitting immediately next to one of the others.
If you want to find some nice 5-color sets, take a look at kuler.adobe.com
Hey paul - which board were you playing on? Best way to deal with this is to notify the board designer and ask them to adjust the color map for the board.
Player defined colors is not something I'd look to implement, it would cause too many troubles when different players chose similar colors as Risky said on the other thread.

Unless you're the only person who sees the colors as you have selected them. It's a great headscratching question to ask someone if they think maybe what I see as Blue is what you see as Green, but because we both learned to call it the same thing, we'll never know the difference?
Yeah, this should no longer be an issue as the mapmaker defines the color choices. Only early boards should have this problem. Although, if the default color palette includes the neutral-looking gray color, Tom, you could change that right?
