In game chat, messages are given numbers. Presumably for reference. In some of the games I'm in with these guys, the chat can get pretty hot n' heavy and pages go by real fast. When you're discussing game mechanics/dynamics in a test game and have dozens of messages to sort through it helps to be able to refer to one specifically.
At least I assume that's why they're numbered.
Anyway, here's my point: Private messages in-game are also numbered and in the same sequence. So if you send private messages and somebody else doesn't, the messages numbers are no longer synced. My suggestion: Separate numbers (or no numbers at all) for non-public in-game messages so that you don't embarrass yourself by referring to what looks like a #64 to you but looks like #63 to everyone else. Cram knows what I'm talking about.
On a similar note, I've been getting message notices on the My Games page but when I go to the game, there's nothing there. I'm thinking it could be a private message that I wasn't suppose to see or know about..
I think my notifiers may be doing this too.

My understanding is that this is the case. It was 'fixed' briefly a while back but some of the sneakier among us asked for the 'bug' back.
..it could be tied to your concern
Shouldn't happen anymore M57 - just been testing this and it seems to work correctly (i.e. you are not notified for private messages that aren't directed to you). What's the gameid?
asm I made the other change recommended.
Sorry, I Don't remember.
uhhmm... but it just happened here.

Yes I am surprised to hear that this had been fixed again, it still happens to me all the time. No gameids for you though because I've never thought it remarkable. I'll post the next time I see it.
I have this happen often as well and will post so ids as they come up.
Weird - just can't reproduce it. Next time it happens can one of you post the gameid here but not go into the game so it's still there and I can check the database? Would be a big help thanks.
How can we tell if there really is a message or not without going into the game?
I thought you were talking about messages appearing in the game lists? Do you mean the icon at the top of the page?
Both. But as Alpha astutely points out, we have no way of knowing whether it's an actual public message or one of the 'phantom' private messages we're talking about if we don't go into the game to find out whether we can see it.
Yes sorry good point. Couple more questions:
1. Are these always team games or is that irrelevant?
2. After you go into the game to try and read the phantom message, does it clear the message flag?
1. Not always team games for sure. I play very few team games and I see this happen regularly.
2. Yep.
I think this falls in the "Not quite a bug, just a tiny oversight" category so I'll post it here.
In the board rankings, when you choose "min games" 20, you are really choosing min games 21, etc.. I'm at 50 games and I'm not making the 50 game cut.
I noticed that too.

ditto.
I wish I had chat.
Here's a really sneaky one.
In a fogged game you can vote to terminate the game in order to find out how many players are left.
