I am a first time designer, and am looking to test out a board. Fairly simple rules, and not a ton of territories, so it should play quickly. Let me know if you are interested
Not a bad idea just to set up a private game with a slew of people from this list: http://www.wargear.net/forum/showthread/346/DEV_Test_Volunteers
Then when the number of joined players is equal to the number of players need for the game, then the game will start.
Good luck and welcome to board designing!
Hey Yertle,
You are actually the reason why I signed up for an account today and will most likely be parting ways with the other risk-site altogether. I wasn't thinking when I made the board title, so it will surely be changed at some point. I am still trying to figure out how to set things up, but I will definitely take your advice. I hate to say it, but this may be my first and last board...not savy with computers or graphic design. Thanks for the encouragement though!
If you have questions with graphics and tools for processing, please post them and we will do our best to explain how to do what you want done. I think most people use either paint.NET (free) or photoshop, but we can answer general questions as well.

And GIMP!
Thanks for your help! I have one Dev game started, and just created another one. I am playing around with the "smog" levels. Also want to see how a game with more people (7) plays out.
The board is kind of inspired by some of FadeToOne's designs, just very basic and with no sort of dice advantages. I had to create it with MS Paint (long story). It does not look too bad, but if I do a second board, I will definitely use one of the recommended programs.
If anyone wants into the second game, it is called "BofNJ Test Game"..
Should probably put a link up, huh?

Based on number of territories and borders of some of your continents, I might recommend tweaking Southwest bonus up to +3 and the Northeast bonus down to +4. In doing this not only will the play be more balanced, but the board will have a more diverse array of bonuses, which will help to speed play.
Looks like a good start. Given your skills with Paint, you're going to pee in your pants when you try Paint.net and start to figure out how layers work. It's what most of the designers around here use so if you get stuck, they can probably help you out. Best of all, it's FREE!
Yeah, Northeast is probably too high, given the borders. I will change it to +4 Not sure about Southwest being +3 though...will have to test out a scenario.
Man, everyone is raving about Paint.NET. I figured it was much better than what I was using, but now I am really looking forward to using it!
i about had an orgasm the first time i actually figured out how to use layering properly (i've heard similar things between paint.net and gimp). prior to that it was all MSpaint and .ppt slides for me.
my first board was all MSpaint and .ppt
(http://www.wargear.net/boards/view/Circles+of+Death/Starting%20Scenario)
my first attempt at layering
(http://www.wargear.net/boards/view/2109/Starting%20Scenario)
More basic example, my first board with layers was Day at the Races:
http://www.wargear.net/boards/designer/1885
Slide the Board Transparency to the left to see the fill layer.
Slide both the Board Transparency and Fill layer to the left to see the fog layer.
That was a really basic example. A little more work, created:
Tetris: http://www.wargear.net/boards/designer/2219
Pangaea: Rise of the Chimp: http://www.wargear.net/boards/designer/2334
These two were completely done using the tools in paint.NET (except I stole the evolution image in Pangaea). It has been fun learning how to use the tools and create some great images.
*edit: I must thank Nygma for his advice and for sending me an image with layers in paint.net to look at with a brief explanation and for helping me with Prion4 which is the board I really learned to create images by making.
Thanks everyone, and nice boards! Kjeld will be happy to know that I plan to give GIMP a go with finishing up this board. I actually am working with two computers right now: a very old and out-dated laptop that operates Windows and is in desperate need of reformatting, and a newer netbook with Ubuntu. So GIMP becomes my best option, sort of by default. But I have been trying to move away from Windows for the last few years.
Hopefully I will have an update by sometime next week. Starting to get a hang of the layering effect.
