Here's what I got done today. Still some work to be done graphically, mostly with on board continent and bonus info, but this is pretty close to finished art. Then its on to the actual construction. Huzzah!

West Europe is a blur from what i can see, may want to clear up some of the borders. besides that looks good!

Here's what I've got going for a Middle Earth map:

I may add strongholds in for flavor (e.g. Minas Tirith, Barad Dur, Orthanc, etc.), but they'll just have defense +2 or something simple, so the map will still have a very basic feel, I think.

This site has a lot of NES maps (http://www.vgmaps.com/Atlas/NES/), although it can still be kind of difficult to turn one into a Risk Map both graphically and with good gameplay. I tried Gauntlet for the past couple of days, but abandoned it because I couldn't figure out how to make it work (even though it looks somewhat easy).
I'm working on a 2210 map now, that should be fairly basic, hopefully ready this weekend.

Beta for WarGear 2210 is open here.  I'll make a few more minor changes to the Graphics and Player Colors and Cards, but I think it should be playable.  (For those familiar with the WF version by ZL, I did use quite a bit the same as it, but seeing as it appears to be correct and with a good set up mod I haven't made too many drastic changes.)

I hope to do Godstorm later today as well.

Very nice. You should give it some cards appropriate to 2210, though.

    Sigh.

Again: it's not the round shape that the anti-circle-map camp is against (if I may be forgiven for speaking for my compatriots in this matter). It's the shortcut it represents for lazy or bad map designers. When implemented judiciously, there are many contexts in which a so-called "circle map" is better than one made with territory-fill, and good mapmakers always have that choice available. The campaign we undertook to ban circle MODE was intended to force every author to make that choice. And we are still right.

    CIRCLES!?!?!?!

It seems to me that the problem isn't the mix of existing boards but the orginization of them. we should tag boards so they can be easily filtered.

    • map stlye
      • earth
        • world map
        • continents
        • countries
        • states
        • cities
        • historical
      • fantasy
        • LOTR
        • video games
        • role playing
        • mythology
        • i.e. ribbon world, planet yertle
      • novelty
        • logos
        • board games
        • pop culture
        • i.e. chutes and ladders, chess
      • puzzle
        • i.e. escalation
    • play style
      • traditional
        • risk style play
      • deviant
        • few modifiers
      • hordes
        • dynamic uber-continents
      • advanced
        • free form
    • board size
      • territory count
      • average # of moves per game
    • popularity
      • 10 games played this month
      • 50 games played this month
      • 250 ...
    • ratings
      •  * or >
      • **or >
      • ***or >
    • age
      • new
      • 10 games played
      • 100 games played
      • 1000 games played

the ratings, age and popularity (as dynamic tags) can work like trophies for the designers as well as filters for the player looking for that new:u.s. map:historical:traditional with > two stars and he can choose between "Gettysburg" or the "13 colonies". unhappy with those options, uncheck historical and now you've got battle usa and wargear:warfare etc. added to the list

Another nice benefit is that the data collected from this will help direct the map makers if the user wants more fantasy or whatever

"oh look 4000 searches for moscow, maybe i should make a moscow map"
