Good point. The current home page for the uninitiated says nothing about the site being free as far as I can tell. However, if this information is to be included, it has to be done in such a way that players don't feel like they're being baited. On the one hand, some players will avoid the site if they smell a money pit, and some players will resent being told that their experience can be enhanced for a fee only after they've become "invested" in a few games.

I think it needs to be made clear on the welcome page that though there is a fee for those who want an "enhanced" experience, perfectly good competitive play is possible without paying a cent. I.e., you will not be tactically disadvantaged for lacking game stats, private message, and design privileges.
