for the last few hours. Sometimes it takes minutes for a new screen..
Of course as soon as I posted, things seem zippy..
Sorry about that - there's a rogue process which was consuming CPU time which has been terminated.
another reason why tom is dreamy.
================
random peon (anytime): "the site isn't as fast as it has been at peak times *sniff*"
tom (usually<day later): "oh i found some random thing, i killed it; its back to being AWESOME."
*going rogue
got some kind of update goin on? took me 3 mins to complete 3 'A' attacks...in a lightning game!
Yes - sorry, monthly backups! All done now.
np, i thought that was the case.
Tom, a thought, maybe you could post back-up times on the home page, -- or delay any lightning games while the back-up is in process (or maybe you already do the latter).
Yes I have thought of doing something like this, the problem is the monthly backup takes about 3 hours so really all lightning games would need to be terminated as many people will be away from their computer if the games were paused then resumed. So on balance I think it's better to play slowly than have all the games terminated en masse.
how about just a warning pop-up ("site may be slow. Backup begins in N minutes.") if you start/join a game when the backup is going on, or for about 3 hours just prior?
Is it just me or is the site slowed right down again? Taken 15 mins to load a game and still not finished!
Nothing unusual in the logs around that time - how is it now?
It was fine about an hour after I posted.
I just know not to attempt to take any turns my time (US Mountain time) from 3am until about 3:20am (I'm a night owl). The site is completely unusable during those 20 min for me. So I won't join a lighting game between 2am and 3:20am.
However, now that I know this, it doesn't really bother me - I understand that site needs maintenance. But simply knowing that is huge, because before I realized it, I lost a lighting game when it was my turn during that 3-3:20am window. Now I can avoid that.
