Love this game. Took me a while to grasp the mercenaries and using the house armies, but once I understood that it made the whole game play even better.
As a huge fan of "King Maker", this is a great homage to original. For those of you who want a little more complexity with your "Risk", then look no further. It's a perfect blend of the two! Many great opportunities to employ a great variety of strategies.
My only complaint is the heraldry is very different than the original and for me it was a bit confusing. I understand the need to combine some of the families for game play, but to assign them in some cases to a different family doesn't feel right. Neville is a much more powerful family than this board betrays. They were in the end the true Kingmakers of the "War of the Roses" period as they went from one house to the other as well as one heir to another.
All that said an absolute Superb board and I recommend it highly.... Two enthusiastic thumbs up!
I don't usually comment on boards, even when I love them, but I have to say this game is beautiful! I feel like it's a shoe-in for a classic as long as folks take a quick look at how flags work. It's quite simple, it's a battle for the crown, continents on the board grant bonuses on the right which you use to take the crown (when you're close, place some armies in the mercenaries square and go for it). War of the roses hits a sweet spot between employing a level of tactical complexity using intuitive mechanics.
The board looks astonishing with all the different shields and the gameplay that comes with the map is unique. It is a complicated board that takes time to get a grip on.
I don't think there are any regions that are too strong, but there may be some regions that are a bit weaker. It is hard to say, the balance overall is definitely good.
Awesome board. Another job well-done by its maker!
When you play with 2-3 players you should increase the fog.
Really good map!
Tactical, with a bit of mystery, interaction with opponents as much as you like (or not), and a little luck required as well (= keeps you on your toes)!
I also like the background story. It fits well with the game play.
I really enjoy it !
Many strategies possibles on 3p+ : get the smaller shields, or get an area or get the higher shields.
Moreover the game can come to the end relatively quickly around 10 turns.
On 2 players version, you can choose between getting the shields or sweeping your opponent off the board, maybe both are the best :-)
Dynamic and highly complex. True picture of a Civil War (AKA not a board for noobs or casual button clickers).
You must take combinations of shield and their implied support not only to wage war on the other claimants, but also support your claim to the throne.
This board will not go to the last man standing, but the first to prove himself worthy. And, at some point you must roll the dice to seize the crown or bow to your future king.
This is one of the more nuanced maps I've seen in 5 years of playing online risk. I love it! I particularly enjoy the two-player game because of the gambit required to go for the crown.
After all, you can be "winning" on the map, but still lose if the other player captures the crown first. Or, you can be "losing" on the map, but if the other player goes for the crown and misses, hey, free turn, you're able to climb back into the game. What's not to love about a game where everybody still has a chance to win late into the game? Well done, M57!
