Big bonuses tied to negative bonuses make this one of those boards where once you have made your mind up to go for the big bonuses, you are committed to defending them. And so it is that I agree in principle with Risky. This is a scary board made by a map-maker with a twisted mind. Graphics are simple but clear. More interesting graphics could easily make this a great (8 star) map.
In heavy fog you really have to be careful not to hole up in your corner, else someone else will sweep the game out from under you. But at the same time, it means you can more easily dare to take the risky little islands, since other players may not put out enough feelers to notice. I have a favorite starting place already, which isn't necessarily a good thing since it might mean the board is a bit imbalanced. Still, having a lot of fun with this board.
I like this map a lot. My one problem with it, and this might be a problem with fog settings on the website - I haven't played enough games to know if this is unique to this board or not, is that you should be able to see the countries that border yours. Without seeing anyone else's countries, the strategy is greatly reduced. There is no way of stopping other players from getting strong, and you only have to worry about your own countries. If this is a website problem and not a map problem, then this was a very fun map.
The negative bonuses do a nice job of keeping this board from becoming yet another Risk clone. Quite playable. The graphics aren't pretty, but they don't detract from the experience.
I think this board offers a great twist on the standard world map style game with a good use of negative bonuses. I find that it is most fun to play with light fog as other fog types ruin the ability to take advantage of the negative bonuses.
Pleasing simple board, with the risk/reward theme with the negatives continents. Fun board that makes you choose when to expand more and how to best hurt your opponents. Nicely done!
This is just a regular "Bunch of Islands" map with the little twist of the joining islands giving you a HUGE bonus or costing you more of your bonuses. You can use them or not but it seems the winner will be the person who uses them steals them to screw other players.
P.S. I hate Dr. Horrible and hope he never makes another map!
