Is there any way for the author of a board to see statistics... how many games completed, how many games active?  Average number of players per game?  What continents captured the most?

You can get some of that information. If you go into the board designer, your maps are divided into groups based on what stage of development they are in. The Live maps are the top grouping. In there, you can see how many public games have been finished on the map. If you go to the "Games List" button in that table (looks like a little clipboard or something), then it gives you links to all the public games played and being played on your map. You can use these to look in on the action.
