It consists of an octagon with eight sections known as "Yao". Divided into a top half (or outermost) section and a bottom half (or innermost). Each Yao is labeled with a name, found in the center black ring of the board (Kun, Qian, Dui, etc.)
Wood-->Feuls Fire-->creates Earth-->Produces Metal-->Holds Water-->Feeds Wood
The supportive nature of the elements means the top yao of any of the areas grants a +3 bonus in hand, a +2 for the yao title to the immidiate right, and +1 to the one next to that.
(I.e.: If you own Wood, Wealth and Wind, you get +3 in hand, +2 in Li, and +1 in Kun)
Wood-->Diplaces Earth-->Contains Water-->Douses Fire-->Melts Metal-->Cuts Wood
The destructive nature of the elements allows you to attack from any yao title to the Yao title 3 clockwise spaces away.
Each Bottom Yao gives the player +2 Armies in hand, and a production bonus in the Center Yinyang related to the amount of yin and yang energy it holds.
See the tutorial for details on how bottom Yao bonuses work.
