Battle for hex-space in this interplanetary race for the gallaxy!

http://www.wargear.net/boards/view/HexGear

HexGear is a large map suitable for up to 16 players. There are two scenarios, HexGear: Classic and HexGear: The Space Pirates.

HexGear: Classic

The first offers a simple continents-based game, with a few “bridge” continents that give a straight negative bonus for controlling them. There are several foundations which allow rapid transport around the map and also grant a bit of extra bonus, though these start off as neutral territories.

HexGear: Classic is by default set to have Medium fog, though the fog level can be changed during game setup. When fog is used, view-only borders let players see across the voids in space, following a general line-of-sight rule. The exception to line-of-sight are the foundations, which have vision of every territory bounding their area of empty space.

HexGear: The Space Pirates

The second offers a more advanced gameplay experience, with the “bridge” territories expanded to cover most of the empty space on the map, now termed pirate space. These pirate spaces allow easy access across vast regions of space, but the general anarchy that reigns there is a constant drain on your treasury. The only way to reverse this drain is to subdue the pirates by force and instill order over an entire contiguous region of space. This will negate the drain to your bonuses, but if even a single pirate territory slips from your grasp, the chaos will begin anew.

Details for the pirate space bonus structure

However, if you manage to clamp down on any whole, contiguous area of pirate space, it is worth a positive 2(N-2) bonus, where N is the number of contiguous pirate space territories in that area (anything less than 0 is rounded up to 0). So, for example:

1 space area = -1 * 1 + 0 = -1

2 space area = -1 * 2 + 0 = -2

3 space area = -1 * 3 + 2(3-2) = -1

4 space area = -1 * 4 + 2(4-2) = 0

5 space area = -1 * 5 + 2(5-2) = 1

6 space area = -1 * 6 + 2(6-2) = 2 etc.
