I agree on year long season, and also miss the monthly competitions

A year seems like a long time for the kind of immediate sense of accomplishment I was aiming for.  A month seems too short for a lot of games.  I like 3 or 4 months, maybe even reset on the solstices and equinoxes for 4 seasons per year?  Just a thought.  Mainly trying to think of ways of new player retention.  

I'd think 3 or 4 months would be max for mew players to remain interest. Won't speak for newbies in general, though. I'm more than happy with my own achievements the first four months I've been here.

Just throwing this out there, but what about both one every three months and a longer over every year?

how about a rolling year season?

So basically all the results form the last 12 months contribute towards the rank, rather than always starting from 1000 every month or every year.
