It took me almost a year to give this board a try, but I'm loving it! I have figured out how to play team games on this board, and also how to play 3 player games, but the strategy changes quite a bit when you go from 3 to 4 players, and I don't know yet how to consistently win on those. I guess I'll need to keep playing and reviewing game histories to figure it out
One of the best!
Like in all, the initial setup and order of play does matter a lot.
East (or CA in particular) is relatively secure, people hesitate to attack especially with some fog and, thus, gives some advantage to the player who controls CA and its cities (great production there.)
CA could be a little bit weakened, maybe by allowing another attack point from Nevada.
I enjoy this board. Its bonus structure, with the cities, isn't my favorite. (That could be because I haven't mastered it yet.) It does seem to me that, in every game I played, the person who controlled the East first ended up winning the game. Because of this, I feel like your starting position can heavily influence the ending. Still, this is a board that a beginner could pick up easily, but on which there are tons of different strategies.
I agree entirely with Coop's review below...I also find the end game quite a bore, but there is no question that it takes a good strategist to win this one. A good test of all round risk skills - you'll need them all to be a force on this board.
Board itself is really good, however the games that play out often are not fun. I've seen more "teaming up" on this board than every other board combined. In fact I cant play this board without running into obvious (and unfair) cooperation.
Maybe its the size or something, I dont know, I like the board but hate how it plays.
