A really fantastic map. Innovative use of capitals as endgame. Initial choices and neutral bashing determine the relative strengths of each player, then turn order and cards are crucial. If the board develops symmetrically, the games can be stale but never is there a stalemate. There will be some variation against the neutrals in the "race" part, but the combination of at most 18 units to place in the gate per turn, and 70 units total to break, there is time for the other two players to react.
3 legged race allows for many strategies, and sometimes it's best to modify your strategy midgame. While this can be said for any decent map, the decision making involved in unit allocation, and resulting inter-player dynamics that this creates, amplifies the best aspects of a 3 player match.
Nicely done.
EDIT: What? An average 0f 6.36?!?! This review needs a bump.
I like the start of this board, however, once you have been eliminated from the triangle, the game is over. Having players remain in the circle is a waste of time as there is no way they can come back.
This is a great example that shows how really different boards on this site can be. Having the race to capitals is a great game mechanic that turns an interesting map to fight on into a delicate balance. Deciding whether to attack the capital or fight for the triangles is a fun dilemma to work through.
I generally dislike 3 player games on all maps, but not this one.
This is one of those boards that will probably grow on me over time; having said that, I did not sightread this one well. It's surprisingly complex for a 3-player board - it's important to not only secure the middle game for bonuses, there's also a considerable amount of effort that needs to be expended to seize the capitals so you can actually win before your battered and beaten opponents bash through the barrier. Very interesting!
This map has probably the best balance a three player map can offer. There is almost never a clear winner until their barrier is broken and the flags are taken.
As has been said, there are several strategies that can be employed successfully on this board.
A player will usually find that there is never a turn where they have enough units to do everything they would like to and this leads to many compromises.
Excellent use of capitals and a very easily understood non-standard board.
Very well designed map. I really like the strategic aspect of the capitols on the side. Forces you to determine how many units to devote to winning the race vs. how many to hold your position on the board.
