Subterfuge is a limited-order dungeon exploration game. Avoid being sighted by opponents, gather enough items and open the Victory Portal from which you can attack opposing capitals to win. Alternatively you can win by killing all enemy onboard units.

Return to fortify from attack is on. Orders are limited. Secure an item by ending turn with your unit on the magic item.

As quickly as possible, secure your first magic item. You can use these secured items as a way to get additional units onto the board. (exception is Sudden Death scenario) Consider taking a torch or two enroute to your items. This will help you gauge where your enemies are. Pay attention to secured magic items (located near their capitals) popping up for your opponents near. You can use the board explorer to determine where the magic item was located and use this as a trail for your oppoenent's movement. Maximize your orders (ie - if you need 5 orders to secure an item, use excess orders to peek around nearby to see if enemies are present; if so fortify away from danger). In scenarios with wildcard, consider taking it after you've aqcuired a couple items of your color. Use the teleporters judiciously - they make it easier not only for you to move about, but also for your enemy(s).
