Boris - custom automation in what environment?
Gnulten - that'd be metric football, right?
Ozy - What kind of software?
Language wise I mostly work in C++, Python and Bourne/Bash. These are small research oriented teams, so I have to do a lot of different jobs, beyond just writing code. I don't want to mention exactly what I do in public, because I use this name in lots of other places, and I don't want to make it too easy to find me IRL, but if anyone is really curious, PM me and I'll tell you more about my job.

Gnulten is from Sweden, so yes. The FIFA variant, not the NFL one.

The bulk of our work is in process control in (primarily) metal and glass production facilities. Anything where there's a huge piece of equipment where there's huge actuators and motors that have to be controlled, we write fully custom process control software that samples inputs/manipulates outputs to produce higher quality product. Depending on what kind of equipment we're trying to control, and how quickly the process itself can react, our fastest algorithms can make control decisions down close to every 1ms.
We also do a lot of custom integration work: Customer might have 3 or 4 separate process control systems that work completely independent of eachother, but if they all talked to each other they could produce better product. So we write something that sits in the middle and talks to each of those 3 or 4 systems in their own language so the data can be exchanged.
Every day has a new technology for us to work on, and brand new pitfalls for us to fall into and work our way out of. I love the work I get to do.

Yes, that's right.
Boris, that sounds awesome.
I have been many things, but lately I am a Property Developer, and a volunteer at the Zoo!

I think it's your avatar, but when I first skimmed this I thought it said "Property Destroyer", and I was like - whoa, that sounds like a fun job!

To be fair, after acquisition, that is usually the next step in the process!

xrayjay, thanks for pointing me this way. I'm a fellow chemistry professor, which is why I was excited* by your orbitals.
M57, congratulations to you on your retirement. Both Math and Music are so important to my happiness here on earth, and both loves started with excellent teachers.
Hi Spider! Don't think I've seen you on the forums before, so I'm glad this post brought you out.
Thanks, Ozyman. Rare commenter, part-time lurker.

That's amazing. Where do you spend the majority of your time? Fascinating line of work!
I host a radio show. Nothing remotely that cool.

Sweet. It's always been my dream to host a radio show. Sports-talk radio just seems like so much fun, getting paid to talk sports all day. I can understand the work involved, but still...
