I of course knew the issues with displaying the 3d world on a 2d map, but it never dawned on me the the equator is routinely shifted also - which distorts the northern hemisphere vs the south

I can't open the link in the OP (don't have a facebook account), so possibly what I'm writing is already covered in that.

While on the topic, a couple of links that could be interesting for someone reading this:

• For the more mathematically inclined, here is a good lecture series on maps ( scroll to "The Mathematics of Maps"). Iirc, slightly above high school mathematics level will be needed. http://www.math.uit.no/ansatte/dennis

I've always been annoyed with maps showing Greenland to be about the same size as Brazil when it's actually just 1/4 as big. 

At least we Norwegians do well with them...

Update - I was in an a library last week and they had an old-school full-sized world wall map.

Using my hand to approximate the distance between latitude lines in the northern hemisphere were twice as much as the southern hemisphere.

It's crazy and silly. 

Part of me feels like we should redo some of the world maps on this site.

Yup, I've tried to make a Peter's Projection WG map, but as C.J. correctly says in the clip above, it freaks me out!
