    I'm not completely familiar with this map.

    It's the first time I've gone first.

    Am I supposed to only get 1 reserve army for placement here?

    Yes. Most boards have some amount of first player advantage. Some board designers offset that by lowering the first player bonus (it will just be for the first round).

    It is often a good idea to place and not attack your first turn.

    Select your scenario, then look at the player/color table.  Look at the column "Starting Bonus".
