Can someone please explain to me what it means when a player ( or 3 players ) in one team end up with a red background on their nicknames? 

I'm going to take a guess here. I 'm guessing you are referring to teams that need other players to join in order to fill them. The teams that are filled have a green background. I hope that was what you were after.

If it's not what hootz has suggested then a link to a place where this is occuring could be helpful.

I think I found the solution myself. It seems that it is linked to having Enemies. 

As they kept stiffing me with playing with myself against 4 or 5 opponents, ....

Yep, red background is someone you have set as an enemy. Green background is someone you have set as a friend.

Where does that show up in tournaments though?

Yeah, I'm not sure about this, is Klaranth maybe looking at the rounds page within a tourney, where red backgrounds denote game losers vs green for winners??

Klaranth's only game with 3+ people on an opposing team is this:

My guess is that he's in a tourney, joined the tourney, has 3 of the his opponents as enemies, and when he's looking at the game information he sees the red background.  Note that he only mentions "tournament" in the forum title, but in his actual description of the problem he's not talking about a tournament.  My prediction is that he's just happens to only see the problem in what is a tournament game, but it has nothing to do with the fact that it's a tournament game.

Note also his comments in the game itself:  He's got partners in a a tourney, and none of them showed up for a previous round.  This round, he's got the same problem (they aren't showing up).  I predict that he set them as enemies now, and so now their names are highlighted.

Especially since when I look at the link you put I see MB with a green background.
