Are we going to have a new theme? For 2016? For 2017?
I think it would be useful to know what the next 2 themes will be in the future. That way you could have a year to percolate ideas for the following year while developing the current theme.
Possible ideas:
And here is last year's thread:
And a big giant list:

Thanks for getting this started Korrun. Let's make this the suggestion thread, and then I'll push it up to Tom and we can think about schedules. I kind of think we should skip this year unless we choose Easy/Simple or something like that.
Also - what do people want to do about the underwater theme? I think Cram is still working on his map, but I know we have at least two other contestants. Is it fair to keep it open still? Cram - would you like us to continue to wait?
Is there anything for 2017?
Not that I know of. I would love to see this start up again.
How about a theme of porting over from warfish some of the more popular boards? Given that these are time-tested and there are still some former warfish players here that would enjoy seeing them again, it seems like an easy way to add boards that would be enjoyed and successful. I know there are already some warfish boards here and I think most were brought over by the original creator, but I'm not sure that applies to all. Unfortunately, I just don't have the bandwidth to port any maps.
I, and am sure some others, could make some map recommendations. But, you'd need a warfish login to be able to view them on warfish. Two off the top of my head:
I presume that ethics and copyright concepts would require getting some kind of approval to port some of the maps. I've contacted map creators on warfish proposing that they bring their boards here, but I don't think many still follow messages from that site.
I don't routinely follow this forum, but I vaguely recall seeing board design discussions here in the past that indicated that some commonly-used techniques on warfish-- such as "circle maps"-- did not meet the standards of wargear (even though some of the most popular boards here use those techniques). So, I'd also kindly suggest that perhaps under the guise of a "classic" or "warfish grandfathered" stipulation/exemption, that some of those techniques be considered acceptable.
The island is on it's way at the moment. Nygma was on it.
Binary madness wouldn't be very hard to recreate either.

That's great. Look forward to it.

In this topic (http://www.wargear.net/forum/showthread/1872p1/Wargear_policy_against_circle_maps), Hugh said he knew the creator and didn't think he'd mind if someone ported it. He said he'd contact him, but I never took it further so I didn't think to follow up.

This is Yuma's The Island. I can't remember if I was supposed to update it or keep his rules as is.
Thank you so much for porting this one Ed
Bring them on!
Not very fair to make a contest out of it since it limits the submissions to a restricted group of developers, but I'm not strongly opposed.
Dare I suggest boards based on films or works of fiction?

Amazing looks!
There was also Yuma's Vikingr: http://warfish.net/war/browse/board?bid=1968098

I've really been wanting to see this one as it was so much fun to play

Hmmm... A little self interest there? ;)
I think this would be an enjoyable theme with plenty to choose from. Perhaps too broad? I believe last time we discussed the next theme, someone suggested horror.

Sorry Ed, i've been kept outta WG updates for some time as work decided to put WG on the blacklist and won't let it thru our firewall. I'm now only on here to make some quick moves until things calm down at home and I can spend more time here again.
I was going to help you pull this Island one in and I think we decided that we were going to have 2 scenarios (to start with). A new one that was going to be an update, and a 'classic' one that kept things as they were on TOS.
How about a D&D-themed adventure game?
And you might think I'd say that due to Ravenloft, but actually, I'd like to see what the other mapmakers on the site could 'conjure up' (pun intended). There's a ton of games to choose from (google 'D&D module list for classic' or 'D&D adventure list' for more recent).
As several of you know, I tried to come up with another map based on the Lost Isle of Castanamir, but it just didn't turn out like I would have liked.
I suspect if there were more D&D-related maps created, it might draw additional players to the site. Just my 2 cents.
Failing that, I'd second Redshift's movie-based theme.

Ok. I'll put together a list of candidates for theme and we can vote or I think in the past, we just gave Tom a list and let him pick one, since he puts up the money. I don't think copying boards from warfish is a good idea, unless you can get the original owner's permission.
How about something inspired by the "Map Porn" community on reddit:

I also like the D&D theme and movie theme!
