Please tell me what the symbols A and T mean when attacking.
I just attacked 3 units with 10 and when I clicked on T and I was wiped out?
I think I'd do better if I knew what the symbols mean. Does T mean 'surrender'?
See this page, under the "attack" heading:

Thank you. I think I get it but I won't be using THAT attack again. Even dice don't roll THAT bad.
LOL at thinking losing 7 or 8 in a row attacking 3 is unusually bad dice.

But it's true that if you would give up an attack early if the dice are going against you, then you shouldn't use the 'A' or 'T' shortcuts unless you also use the drop-down to limit the maximum number of units you can lose.
Lol, it's when you start losing 14-0 & 16-1 that taking your time or using the limit scroll function seems a bit more worth it.
I have stopped using the A and T attack function....unless I'm way ahead in the game.
There are some games where you have to use A and T all the time if you want to have a chance to win, for example Battle of Bladensburg and Iwo Jima, both of which give you 6 attacks max

..and Battle of Waterloo, which also lets you hit the A or T button 6 times per turn.
It's not all or nothing either. If you're concerned that a string of bad luck will devastate you, then limit your max losses by attacking with 10 (or whatever).
i never did really understand the whole pull down thing. is it: a) attack until you have # left in the stack, or b) attack with # of units? (#, of course, is the number you choose from the pull down)

I believe it is to attack (with 3) with that number of units only.

I thought it would attack until that number of units died. Anybody know for sure?

What ratsy said which I think is this one. I rarely use it but when doing a big stack vs big stack and you don't want to do the A or T but don't want to keep hitting 3 this is the middle ground.

Yep, that's it. Recently played a Bladensburg and used that kind of attack all the time.
Im glad I finally know how that works.
The drop down list allows you to make a multiple attack with the specified number of units. This number represents the maximum number of units you are prepared to lose in the attack.

Are you saying a Multi-Attack counts as one attack??? Did Tom intended to be that way?
Yep and Yep

Ok. Then, I assume using the drop down list also counts as only 1 attack which is probably better than A and T in most cases, in the boards with limited number of attacks that is, no?

Yes, counts as one. I think it's better.
Yes - I also think it's an interesting part of the tactics.
