I love love love this board and it pains me to no end to write this review.
Other players have pointed out that luck plays a huge role in this game and some bad rolls early on can doom your game. That doesn't define a board's rating to me because I can chalk that up to personal preference, and because it fits this board's theme (it SHOULDN'T be easy to survive for long in a mall full of zombies!).
But the starting positions are WILDLY imbalanced, and that I cannot forgive. If you start at the Northwest or Southwest entrance, you can give up. You can ONLY get two +1 bonuses on the first turn, and then you're blocked by 3 neutrals. In contrast, for example, Northeast has two +1s and a +2. East Parking can access three +1s and the movie theatre. Et cetera. I don't remember this imbalance from the original version of the board, but the intervening years may have clouded my memory. This version is unplayably unfair over a short sample of games.
Quick gameplay. Not all of the starting spots seem to have a fair layout, and with the limited amount of troops you get, dice rolls are crucial, but some solid strategy goes a long way with this map.
My favorite board from Warfish. However, the rules have been changed - we can no longer return to place after attack as we could before. This is fine, but it greatly changes the strategy.
Forget one bad turn - one bad roll and you could be done! This game plays extremely fast and gives a big advantage to players who go first in the turn order. You must be aggressive to win and use your 5 transfers very carefully!
My big complaint is that you can be elimianted without ever taking a turn - more neutrals to protect the access points to other players starting points would help.
I also get frustrated that you have to defeat an occupied territory to get a card (there are so many vacant territories it's hard to do it after the first couple turns sometimes). If you are behind to need cards and it's just hard to get them.
Overall it's a fast paced game and you need some luck on your side to win.
I have played a tournament on this board with 2-person teams, and that was much more enjoyable for me than solo.
A good board with a variety of continent shapes and odds! A homage to many great warfish players as well. The fog adds a great element of mystery. The balance of caution and aggression makes for truly intense nerve-wracking decision making. Good for 4-8.
